In this course, we will spend 7 weeks exploring quilt block patterns as components of a visual language - letters in an alphabet, but instead of letters spelling words and building sentences, small scraps and shapes assemble to make blocks and designs. Quilts, and quilters, have always been storytellers. This class is for folks who are interested in learning the history of common traditional quilt blocks, so that we may read and use their compositions in new, more thoughtful ways. We will practice making the following blocks: Log Cabin, Flying Geese, Sawtooth Star, and Bear’s Paw. While making each of the four blocks in black and white, the group will discuss each one’s history and symbolism, and look at examples of how the blocks have been used.  In the latter weeks of the course, students will experiment with these traditional patterns - adding color, pattern, and your own symbolism and meaning-making to push their existing symbolism further. Now knowing what each block was created to signify, what does, or what can, it mean to you? How will you use it? If time is available, we will stitch 4 or more of your blocks into a quilt top, and if we’re moving at super speed, add a backing and quilt them into a wall hanging. Hand and Machine Sewing techniques will be covered. Scrap fabric will be provided, as well as black and white fabrics. Two sewing machines will be available for student use - if you have a machine you would like to bring for your personal use, you are welcome to do so.
