Please note: The Art League School offers adult studio courses exclusively for individuals aged 17 and above. By registering for a class or workshop at Art League Houston, you agree to the ALH School policies found HERE. Please review terms and conditions before registering. Refunds or class credits will only be issued for students who officially withdraw. All refund withdrawal requests are subject to a $100 (for 6-7 week classes) or $60 (workshops) registration and processing fee. Unless officially canceled by ALH, registrations are considered final as of 6 days prior to the workshop start date or at the start of the school quarter for classes. About the ALH School

During this class, students will learn to use paper collage techniques to render images in various ways and to varying degrees. We will also explore the use of ink pens, colored pencils, markers, and paint to create different images, sometimes using existing images (a la traditional collage) with our mixed media processes to create new compositions.

Fabric and textiles are tied to all of us: from family heirlooms that hold nostalgic meaning to scraps of hot pink fur from Joann’s art supply. In this class, students will create mixed media, collage paintings using their own background and photos as a point of inspiration. Students will learn about contemporary collage artists and painters such as Deborah Roberts and Hugo McCloud, and work to improve color theory, build dynamic compositions, and use good craftsmanship with mixed media techniques. This will be a fun and creative way to explore a range of materials, take risks in the studio, and preserve our memories from this time.

“Linocut”, also known as linoleum block printing, has a rich history over the last century and remains an extremely versatile and popular technique for artists today. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of relief printmaking, covering several ways to utilize linoleum blocks including reduction printing and jigsaw printing. Students will use Art League’s etching press to create editions of prints in black and white and full color, and will also learn how to ink their blocks creatively to create effects and monoprints.

No prior printmaking experience is necessary. Oil-based printing inks and newsprint will be provided for the class.

In this class, students will learn how to turn plastic waste into yarn (a.k.a “plarn”) and explore textile-based creative applications of the material. This class covers jewelry construction techniques including: piercing, drilling, soldering, riveting, forging reticulation and roller printing as well as hydraulic forming. Utilizing screen printing, students will explore the possibilities of repetition, color, and texture to create printed fabrics and complex compositions. Students will learn the basics of screen printing on fabric, mixing pigments, and pattern design. The class will explore a variety of stencil methods that don't require a dark room or exposure unit, including contact paper and wax crayon. Techniques learned can be used to create fabrics for clothing, home goods, artwork, collage, and more.

Students will explore the vibrancy and transparency of watercolor. The instructor will emphasize color, design, and contrast while working with students on independent projects or assigned exercises. Learn how to use watercolor in unexpected ways to create bold results. Initial steps in using the medium will focus on value, layering, creating forms and then color relationships. Create a foundation for working and then go beyond traditional watercolor by experimenting with different techniques. Discover how to take advantage of unexpected "mistakes" for your own benefit. Imagery for this course will be mostly representational while encouraging atmospheric effects and the looser side of the medium.

Watercolor is vibrant and translucent in nature, has no odor and is affordable. This class is for All Levels. Previous painting experience is not required, however an understanding in value drawing is helpful.

In this class students will learn traditional calligraphy with a brief introduction on the history and development from ancient to modern times. Oil pastel is a relatively new medium dated from the early 20 century. It is a very versatile and dynamic material that combines drawings and painting properties. An easy to control, very flexible to mix with medium, makes oil pastels ideal for working on any surface. Over the course of 7 weeks, students will discover exciting techniques and they will learn to combine oil pastels with other mediums such as acrylic and watercolor.This class also covers a variety of exercises to guide students to create effective compositions following the elements and principles of art. Some assignments are inspired by impressionist and post-impressionist artists' approaches to painting.

This class is a great fit for anyone looking to transition between drawing to painting or experienced artists looking to learn about the endless applications of oil pastels. All levels are welcome.

Experience the union of breath, body movement and ink painting. We begin the class with a guided meditation then progress into gentle body movement to prepare us for painting. The poses and stretches are therapeutic and suitable for all levels and ages. Through yoga exercise you relieve tension, let go of stress and open the body to be better prepared for painting.

Next, we will learn traditional and innovative ink painting methods as well as ink grinding, brush movement and painting technique using organic and inorganic tools/ instruments. Cartooning is a process, a language and an art form. This class will provide students with the means for creative self-discovery and the exploration of complex ideas through visual, sequential storytelling. Students will record their observations, experiences and memories in their sketchbook and then translate that material into pictographic narratives...some only one panel and some multiple pages. The class is essentially a writing and an art class rolled into one. The class focuses much more on story and process than drawing skills.

Depicting the human face has been a subject of fascination for centuries. Even with the development of photography, hand-drawn portraiture continues to be a relevant and expressive form of art. This course is meant to encourage your curiosity and help you better understand the underlying anatomy of the face and how to achieve accurate proportions.

The goal of this 7 week course is to make drawing portraiture less daunting by using systematic methods that encourage students to tackle any obstacles they may encounter. Students can expect individualized feedback throughout the course, as it can be very helpful in the learning process. We will be working from live models in both short and long pose formats. By simplifying the face to its most essential components, students will be able to create a solid foundation with proportions in mind. We will be using both graphite pencil and color pencil and exploring white drawing paper as well as toned paper. At the end of the course students will be able to more confidently render the face with a clear set of strategies and objectives in mind.

Intro to Figure Drawing is a comprehensive course designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles and techniques of drawing the human figure. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate artists who wish to develop their skills in capturing the human form accurately and expressively. The classes will be centered around working from a live model. Throughout the course, students will explore various aspects of figure drawing, including anatomy, proportion, gesture, and form. They will learn to observe and analyze the human body, understanding its underlying structure and how it moves. The objective of this class is to introduce students to the classical method of painting landscapes utilizing oil paints. The goal in the finished landscape painting will aim to capture the essence and harmony of elements found in a landscape.

This course will explore using geometric shapes as a method to create reduced landscapes with acrylic paint. Images will be laid out in plains of color that will desaturate or shift in value as they recede into space, invoking depth. Processes will include establishing foreground, middle-ground, and background spaces, hard edge painting, layering, and understanding color relationships. Students are encouraged to invent their own image or use a landscape picture to be translated into a simplified abstraction.

Acrylic paints are fast drying, water-soluble and are easy to clean up. It’s also forgiving, if you make a mistake you can paint over it quickly. No prior experience is necessary.

This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced students and/or as a continuation of "Landscape into Art." The instructor will demonstrate and discuss techniques used in landscape painting in the first class session. Painting and making studies on site is essential in creating a convincing and expressive landscape. This will be further discussed in class. The primary medium is oil, however, acrylic and water-based oil paint is accepted. Watercolor is not accepted.

Studio 1

In this course, students will learn how to paint portraits in the acrylic medium. The course will cover the structure of the face, light and shadow, color temperatures, and expressive mark-making techniques that apply to oil as well. The course will address the logistical challenges and advantages of working in acrylic and how to maximize the latter while working from life and photos. The second part of the class will involve using the acrylic medium to develop larger-scale works from photos and with longer live painting sessions. This class is recommended for intermediate to advanced students.

Landscape into Art (P-11) | IN-PERSON CLASS

Studio 2

Utilizing memory and personal experience, students are encouraged to render their own impressions of the subject. Individual elements of the landscape are explored and demonstrated. The instructor will offer techniques and specific methods in landscape painting. The class includes informal discussions ranging from painting methods to basic color theory. The primary medium is oil, however, acrylic and water-based oil paint is accepted.

Intro to Gouache (P-12) | IN-PERSON WORKSHOP

This workshop will serve as a crash-course style introduction to painting with gouache! Gouache paints are fluid like watercolors, but with a unique opacity and vibrance that offers many possibilities for creative expression. During this 1-day workshop we will dive into the specific properties of gouache, exploring a variety of textures and techniques before applying these techniques to a small painting project. Students will come away with a basic knowledge of gouache painting approaches and some ideas for how they can continue working with the medium in future! Open to all levels.
