Please note: The Art League School offers adult studio courses exclusively for individuals aged 17 and above. By registering for a class or workshop at Art League Houston, you agree to the ALH School policies found HERE. Please review terms and conditions before registering. Refunds or class credits will only be issued for students who officially withdraw. All refund withdrawal requests are subject to a $100 (for 6-7 week classes) or $60 (workshops) registration and processing fee. Unless officially canceled by ALH, registrations are considered final as of 6 days prior to the workshop start date or at the start of the school quarter for classes. Cartooning is a process, a language and an art form. This class will provide students with the means for creative self-discovery and the exploration of complex ideas through visual, sequential storytelling. Students will record their observations, experiences and memories in their sketchbook and then translate that material into pictographic narratives...some only one panel and some multiple pages. The class is essentially a writing and an art class rolled into one. The class focuses much more on story and process than drawing skills.

In this course students will learn the age-old skill of bookbinding using a variety of structures and materials. This bookbinding course is open to all skill levels and will provide students with the fundamental knowledge and mechanical skills needed to get started. In this course students will learn different book binding and stitching techniques to create their very own sketchbook or journal from scratch. Students will learn how to make their own hardcover book by binding paper together. A few styles of books students will learn how to make are accordion books, hardcover books, soft cover books. A few styles of binding methods students will learn how to use are singer sewn, side sewn, and glued binding.

“Linocut”, also known as linoleum block printing, has a rich history over the last century and remains an extremely versatile and popular technique for artists today. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of relief printmaking, covering several ways to utilize linoleum blocks including reduction printing and jigsaw printing. Students will use Art League’s etching press to create editions of prints in black and white and full color, and will also learn how to ink their blocks creatively to create effects and monoprints.
No prior printmaking experience is necessary. Oil-based printing inks and newsprint will be provided for the class.

Learn how to use watercolor in unexpected ways to create bold results. Initial steps in using the medium will focus on value, layering, creating forms and then color relationships. Imagery for this course will be mostly representational while encouraging atmospheric effects and the looser side of the medium.
Watercolor is vibrant and translucent in nature, has no odor and is affordable. This class is for All Levels. Previous painting experience is not required, however an understanding in value drawing is helpful.

Oil pastel is a relatively new medium dated from the early 20 century. It is a very versatile and dynamic material that combines drawings and painting properties. An easy to control, very flexible to mix with medium, makes oil pastels ideal for working on any surface. Over the course of 7 weeks, students will discover exciting techniques and they will learn to combine oil pastels with other mediums such as acrylic and watercolor. This class also covers a variety of exercises to guide students to create effective compositions following the elements and principles of art. Some assignments are inspired by impressionist and post-impressionist artists' approaches to painting.
This class is a great fit for anyone looking to transition between drawing to painting or experienced artists looking to learn about the endless applications of oil pastels. All levels are welcome.

Fabric and textile have a tie to all of us: from family heirlooms that hold nostalgic meaning to scraps of hot pink fur from Joann’s art supply. We follow and learn about contemporary collage artists, and work to improve use of color theory, build dynamic compositions, and use good craftsmanship with collage techniques. This workshop offers a foundation in stop-motion as a traditional animation technique and is designed to provide an understanding of animation as an art form of personal expression. We will briefly explore flipbook, claymation, and cut-out animation. Through in-class exercises and demonstrations, you will learn how to create a short animation and how to record and produce your own foley sound.
For this class, you will only need a smartphone that is compatible with the Stop Motion Studio app. The instructor will provide all other supplies. For the second day of class, you will need to bring assorted found objects.

Depicting the human face has been a subject of fascination for centuries. Even with the development of photography, hand-drawn portraiture continues to be a relevant and expressive form of art. This course is meant to encourage your curiosity and help you better understand the underlying anatomy of the face and how to achieve accurate proportions.
The goal of this 7 week course is to make drawing portraiture less daunting by using systematic methods that encourage students to tackle any obstacles they may encounter. Students can expect individualized feedback throughout the course, as it can be very helpful in the learning process. We will be working from live models in both short and long pose formats. By simplifying the face to its most essential components, students will be able to create a solid foundation with proportions in mind. We will be using both graphite pencil and color pencil and exploring white drawing paper as well as toned paper. At the end of the course students will be able to more confidently render the face with a clear set of strategies and objectives in mind.

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced students looking to elevate their figure drawing skills. Unlike the introductory class, which focuses more on quick sketches, this course emphasizes longer poses, providing students with the opportunity to create fully developed, refined drawings. While key concepts from the "Intro to Figure Drawing" course—such as sight measuring, plumb lines, and landmarks—will continue to be reinforced, new techniques will also be introduced. These include compositional considerations, hatching and contour hatching, as well as a deeper exploration of charcoal pencils and toned paper.
Though prior completion of "Intro to Figure Drawing" is not required, it will be beneficial. A foundational understanding of figure drawing is recommended for those enrolling. As we will be working from live models for the vast majority of the semester, a one time model fee payment will be required at the beginning of the semester and will range from $48-$120, depending on enrollment.

Learn how to understand color harmony within a finished abstract painting. Students will manipulate high and low contrasting colors, while arranging them into balanced, geometric compositions. This course will focus on color relationships, pictorial space, and fundamental uses of working with acrylic. Paint will be applied in several layers to achieve strong, complex color effects. Additional methods taught will include glazing, building the paint surface, discussing materials and taping.
Acrylic paints are fast drying, water-soluble and are easy to clean up. It’s also forgiving - if you make a mistake you can paint over it quickly. Color Abstraction is for all levels. No prior experience is necessary.

It is recommended for intermediate to advanced students who have some painting experience and who would like to further develop their painting style. An emphasis will be placed on the portrait but other genres of painting are encouraged as well. The first half of the class will address portrait painting fundamentals and the second half will focus primarily on more expressive and experimental techniques.

Let’s explore flowers! In this workshop we will be painting a loose impressionistic floral. We will be using the alla prima technique, also known as "direct painting" or “wet-on-wet”.
My goal is to teach and equip my students with the tools to break down a subject into big shapes then adding just a few details to round out the painting to bring it to life. We will talk about Design, Value, Drawing and Color. I will demonstrate a painting to help give students a visual example before students choose a floral design provided to create their own. Painting supplies can be reserved for an additional fee directly from the instructor.

In this outdoor workshop we will be moving out of the classroom to explore painting with gouache in plein-air! During this one-day workshop we will familiarize ourselves with the unique properties of gouache and the ins and outs of painting outdoors as we paint from nature. Open to all experience levels. (Note: Specific location will be provided nearer to the date, but will be close to the Montrose area)

Knowing your subject well will help you create that spark that makes your pet your own. We will create an 8x10 pet portrait using oil paint in the alla prima method (also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” oil Painting). Using this technique, we will complete entire paintings in one session without waiting for the paint layers to dry completely. We will work on establishing values and mixing colors. Using these techniques will help us discover the energy and life of your favorite furry subject.
Students are recommended to have some drawing and painting experience but not required. Note: supplies may be purchased directly from the instructor for an additional $25 fee, which includes a canvas that students can keep of their painting - students must notify instructor know you wish to rent one week before workshop.
