Please note: The Art League School offers adult studio courses exclusively for individuals aged 17 and above. All refund withdrawal requests are subject to a $100 (for 6-7 week classes) or $60 (workshops) registration and processing fee. This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of crocheting. Oil pastel is a relatively new medium dated from the early 20 century. It is a very versatile and dynamic material that combines drawings and painting properties. An easy to control, very flexible to mix with medium, makes oil pastels ideal for working on any surface. Over the course of 7 weeks, students will discover exciting techniques and they will learn to combine oil pastels with other mediums such as acrylic and watercolor.This class also covers a variety of exercises to guide students to create effective compositions following the elements and principles of art. Some assignments are inspired by impressionist and post-impressionist artists' approaches to painting.

This class is a great fit for anyone looking to transition between drawing to painting or experienced artists looking to learn about the endless applications of oil pastels. All levels are welcome.

In this workshop we will be making prints using the colorful and cameraless process, Lumen Printing! Lumen Printing is a photography process that uses photographic paper and chemistry traditionally used in the darkroom setting, and combines it with light and subject matter found outside. The results yielded from this experimental process are often surprising and colorful. Over the course of the workshop, students will create their own Lumen prints, while also diving into the history, applications, and various techniques associated with the process. This is a beginner friendly process, so no previous experience is required!

Eco-Textiles: Making Plastics Into Yarn (T-1) | IN-PERSON CLASS

In this class, students will learn how to turn plastic waste into yarn (a.k.a “plarn”) and explore textile-based creative applications of the material. Quilting Language: Storytelling Through Pattern (T-2) | IN-PERSON CLASS

In this course, we will spend 7 weeks exploring quilt block patterns as components of a visual language - letters in an alphabet, but instead of letters spelling words and building sentences, small scraps and shapes assemble to make blocks and designs. Quilts, and quilters, have always been storytellers. This class is for folks who are interested in learning the history of common traditional quilt blocks, so that we may read and use their compositions in new, thoughtful ways. We will practice making the following blocks: Log Cabin, Flying Geese, Sawtooth Star, and Bear’s Paw. While making each of the four blocks in black and white, the group will discuss each one’s history and symbolism, and look at examples of how the blocks have been used. In the latter weeks of the course, we will experiment with these traditional patterns - adding color, pattern, and your own symbolism and meaning-making to push their existing symbolism further. Now knowing what each block was created to signify, what does, or what can, it mean to you? How will you use it? If time is available, we will stitch 4 or more of your blocks into a quilt top, and if we’re moving at super speed, add a backing and quilt them into a wall hanging.

Hand and Machine Sewing techniques will be covered. Scrap fabric will be provided, as well as black and white fabrics. Two sewing machines will be available for student use - if you have a machine you would like to bring for your personal use, you are welcome to do so.

Utilizing screen printing, students will explore the possibilities of repetition, color, and texture to create printed fabrics and complex compositions. Techniques learned can be used to create fabrics for clothing, home goods, artwork, collage, and more.

In this workshop we will utilize one of the most fundamental forms of printmaking (carving) to make personalized rubber stamps. We will in turn use these stamps to print imagery on to a 3 x 6 in. red envelopes (Li Xi envelopes handed out on Lunar New Year). The goal of this workshop is to make a small edition of personalized Li Xi envelopes and at the end of the workshop, we all trade an envelope with each other. I encourage workshop participants to share and use these envelopes for gift giving purposes or to keep them as pieces of art in themselves. I will have designs to select from based off Chinese motifs that students can pick from or choose and alter to their desire. I will also provide the rubber carving blocks and the red envelopes that will serve as our print substrate.

Learn how to use watercolor in unexpected ways to create bold results. Initial steps in using the medium will focus on value, layering, creating forms and then color relationships. Experience the union of breath, body movement and ink painting. We begin the class with a guided meditation then progress into gentle body movement to prepare us for painting. The poses and stretches are therapeutic and suitable for all levels and ages. Through yoga exercise you relieve tension, let go of stress and open the body to be better prepared for painting.

Next, we will learn traditional and innovative ink painting methods as well as ink grinding, brush movement and painting technique using organic and inorganic tools/ instruments. Color Theory is an introduction to how color behaves, color interaction and the psychological qualities of color. In this studio-based watercolor and mixed media workshop we will explore painting and drawing with tube watercolors and watercolor pencils. Various experimental effects will be employed to depict light and shadow and contrast using warm and cool colors with the addition of applications of translucent layers of collage, applied subtle textures and use of open unpainted spaces. Demos and exercises will incorporate further use of mixed media into watercolor painting, including resist mediums, different grounds, such as gesso and acrylic medium, and collage with acid free tissue paper and rice paper. The subject focus will be on natural elements such as water, rocks, and insects using photographic sources, for example, lily ponds and streams and small still life setups in the studio of water vessels and flowering plants to make mixed media studies. Contemporary and historical artists will also be referenced.

Cartooning is a process, a language and an art form. This class will provide students with the means for creative self-discovery and the exploration of complex ideas through visual, sequential storytelling. The class is essentially a writing and an art class rolled into one. The class focuses much more on story and process than drawing skills.

Learn how to understand color harmony within a finished abstract painting. Students will manipulate high and low contrasting colors, while arranging them into balanced, geometric compositions. This course will focus on color relationships, pictorial space, and fundamental uses of working with acrylic. Paint will be applied in several layers to achieve strong, complex color effects. Additional methods taught will include glazing, building the paint surface, discussing materials and taping.

Acrylic paints are fast drying, water-soluble and are easy to clean up. It’s also forgiving - if you make a mistake you can paint over it quickly. Color Abstraction is for all levels. No prior experience is necessary.

This course is a continuation of "Landscape into Art," but with an emphasis on composing a painting to be non-representational or abstract. There will be plenty of latitude to continue the methods already undertaken in the previous landscape classes as well. The instructor will demonstrate and discuss these approaches as used by current and past masters. This class is offered for all levels, however, students are expected to have a basic knowledge of drawing and composition. Among all levels, beginners will be encouraged to draw. The primary medium is oil, although acrylic and water-based oil paint is accepted.

This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced students and/or as a continuation of "Landscape into Art." The instructor will demonstrate and discuss techniques used in landscape painting in the first class session. Painting and making studies on site is essential in creating a convincing and expressive landscape. This will be further discussed in class. The primary medium is oil, however, acrylic and water-based oil paint is accepted. Watercolor is not accepted.

In this class we will learn all about the basics of painting with acrylics! Students will be introduced to a range of painting techniques and styles, working primarily from still life, copies of existing paintings, and photos. This class will cover all stages of the painting process, from sourcing reference material, composing an image and “blocking out” a painting, all the way to embellishing a painting with expressive mark-making. Students will come away from the course with a broad understanding of acrylic painting approaches, and a foundational knowledge of color, value and composition. This class is geared towards beginners, but all experience levels are welcome.

Studio 2

Utilizing memory and personal experience, students are encouraged to render their own impressions of the subject. Individual elements of the landscape are explored and demonstrated. The instructor will offer techniques and specific methods in landscape painting. The class includes informal discussions ranging from painting methods to basic color theory. The primary medium is oil, however, acrylic and water-based oil paint is accepted.

Expressive Portraiture (P-9) | IN-PERSON CLASS

This class is recommended for intermediate to advanced students who have some portrait painting experience and who would like to leverage their fundamental knowledge to create expressive portraits. Students will work primarily from a live model to develop their portrait painting acumen. Various expressive techniques will be discussed in addition to the fundamentals of portrait painting including color temperature, head face and neck anatomy, value, light and shadow among other things. In this class, students will strengthen observational acuity while developing their expressive mark making.

Pet Portrait Workshop (P-10) | IN-PERSON WORKSHOP

Studio 1

Knowing your subject well will help you create that spark that makes your pet your own. We will create an 8x10 pet portrait using Oil Paint in the Alla prima method (also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” Oil Painting). Using this technique, we will complete entire paintings in one session without waiting for the paint layers to dry completely. We will work on establishing values and mixing colors. Using these techniques will help us discover the energy and life of your favorite furry subject.

Students are recommended to have some drawing and painting experience but not required. Note: Supplies may be purchased directly from the instructor for an additional $25 fee, which includes a canvas that students can keep of their painting - students must notify instructor know you wish to rent one week before workshop.

Plein-Air Gouache (P-11) | IN-PERSON WORKSHOP

OFF SITE

In this outdoor workshop we will be moving out of the classroom to explore painting with gouache in plein-air! During this one-day workshop we will familiarize ourselves with the unique properties of gouache and the ins and outs of painting outdoors as we paint from nature. Open to all experience levels. Note: Specific location will be provided nearer to the date, but will be close to the Montrose area.

Cubist Still-Life (P-12) | IN-PERSON WORKSHOP

Studio 3

This workshop will focus on still life painting with a geometric abstract approach. Students will learn how to use acrylic paints and mediums, collage, as well implementing tape as a drawing/painting tool. The workshop will be split up into three days, with each day building off from the previous day's curriculum.
