Oil pastel is a relatively new medium dated from the early 20 century. It is a very versatile and dynamic material that combines drawings and painting properties. An easy to control, very flexible to mix with medium, makes oil pastels ideal for working on any surface. Over the course of 9 weeks, students will discover exciting techniques and they will learn to combine oil pastels with other mediums such as acrylic and watercolor. This class also covers a variety of exercises to guide students to create effective compositions following the elements and principles of art. Some assignments are inspired by impressionist and post-impressionist artists' approaches to painting. This class is a great fit for anyone looking to transition between drawing to painting or experienced artists looking to learn about the endless applications of oil pastels. All levels are welcome. Please note: some tools and materials will be provided by the instructor.

This online course explores the making of art in the form of collage and assemblage, with a focus on the consideration of imagery chosen and material history of other mediums. The materials used in this course will be focused around individual interest and students are encouraged to bring in anything including but not limited to, fabric, photo imagery, drawings, paper, books, magazines, cardboard, scraps of wood, scraps of metal, etc. This first meeting will be an introduction to how to collect the materials one would need to start to make the work they envision themselves creating.

Studio 1

In this studio-based watercolor and mixed media workshop we will explore painting and drawing with tube watercolors and watercolor pencils. Various experimental effects will be employed to depict light and shadow and contrast using warm and cool colors with the addition of applications of translucent layers of collage, applied subtle textures and use of open unpainted spaces. Demos and exercises will incorporate further use of mixed media into watercolor painting, including resist mediums, different grounds, such as gesso and acrylic medium, and collage with acid free tissue paper and rice paper. The subject focus will be on natural elements such as water, rocks, and insects using photographic sources, for example, lily ponds and streams and small still life setups in the studio of water vessels and flowering plants to make mixed media studies. Contemporary and historical artists will also be referenced.

Studio 3

In this class series we will be learning how to unite breath, body movement and ink painting. Through meditation and yoga poses we can tune into the body and cultivate a sacred space for creative energy, intuition and inspiration to flow. We begin with a guided meditation to open and relax the mind, then progress into gentle body movement to help us understand our connection to nature and ourselves. These exercises are structured to be very therapeutic for all levels and ages. Through yoga exercise you relieve tension, let go of stress and open the body to be better prepared for painting. Through meditation and body work, you have the opportunity to dive deeper into the creative spectrum and gain direct access into the right brain —the storage house of art!

Next, we will learn traditional and innovative ink painting methods to create animals, plants and other themes. We will learn ink grinding, brush movement and brushstroke technique. We will also be using different kinds of papers and fude pen to explore the different effects of ink. We will cover historical, philosophical and theoretical references to each theme. Suitable for all levels of ink painters.
