related illnesses, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, and other
physical challenges.
ABOUT THE HEALING ART PROGRAM
Art
League Houston (ALH) began offering its free Healing Art
classes in 1990, as there were no free creative outlets for
people living with HIV/AIDS in Houston at the time. In 1995,
ALH added additional classes to serve the needs of adults
living with other severe and catastrophic disabilities. Although there are
many art programs for children living with disease and
disability, the ALH Healing Art Program continues to be the
only one of its kind for adults in Houston, outside of
hospital or clinical settings. Since 1990, over 6200 people
have participated in the Healing Art Program.
ALH
Healing Art classes are taught by professional artists and
conducted in a fun, supportive atmosphere. Four weekly classes
are offered year round and art supplies are provided at no
cost to participant.
The program includes classes for adults with HIV/Aids,
cancer related illnesses, Multiple Sclerosis and physical
challenges. Lunch
is provided free to participants once a month by Niko Niko's
and the National Council of Jewish Women. Each year students are
provided with several opportunities to exhibit and sell their
work. This is
important, as many students in the program live on low or
fixed-incomes.
One
student in the program writes:
I
joined the Healing Arts to learn how to express my creativity
and to help me deal with my disability ... To my surprise, art
has been extremely therapeutic.
-Shelia Joyce Haynes, MS Healing Art
Group
The
ALH Healing Art Program provides students with positive
alternatives to feelings of loneliness, boredom and
anxiety. The
Program instead offers a sense of hope, confidence and
camaraderie, and gives its students encouragement and support
as they become more self-sufficient, active members of the
community.

KERRY
INMAN
Inman
Gallery was founded by Kerry Inman in 1990 as a project space
dedicated to showcasing the work of younger artists who were
under-recognized by the contemporary gallery scene in Houston
of the late 80's. Since that time, Inman Gallery has steadily
grown into a nationally recognized venue that encourages
innovative, thoughtful visual presentations and nurtures
talent. Emphasizing visual exploration and conceptual thinking
over purely formal solutions have been cornerstones of the
gallery programming since its inception. Inman Gallery was
recognized in 2003 by the International Art Critics
Association (AICA-USA). Dario Robleto's solo exhibition was
awarded first place for "Best solo exhibition in a commercial
gallery nationally". Two gallery artists, Dario Robleto and
Robyn O'Neil were included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial.
Gallery artist Amy Blakemore was included in the 2006 Whitney
Biennial.
